Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is continuing works to remove storm debris from within the Dandenong Ranges National Park and Silvan Reservoir catchment.
Due to the scale of the operation, forest contractors, including VicForests, have been engaged to assist FFMVic in the recovery efforts.
FFMVic Regional Recovery Manager Shane Vandenborn said that heavy vehicles and machinery would be active in the area from now until June as debris is removed.
“We are prioritising the clearing of roads and road reserves within the National Park and Reservoir catchment,” he said.
“Our main priority is re-establishing safe access for the public and firefighters, as well as reducing longer-term bushfire risk.”
As fallen trees can also provide valuable habitat for wildlife, they will be left in place where appropriate. For all other debris, the best end-use will be considered – this may include commercial firewood and timber products, park furniture, bollards and supporting community-led projects.
Due to the extent of the damage around the Dandenong Ranges National Park and Silvan Reservoir catchment, some tracks in the area will be closed to the public while works are carried out.
Recovery Manager Mr Vandenborn said that public safety is the number one concern while these critical recovery works are being carried out.
“Closing these roads and walking track closures is a small inconvenience, but it is done to ensure the safety of the public, contractors and our staff while heavy machinery is in the area.”
