Duduroa Dhargal Aboriginal Corporation (DDAC) successfully conducted a cultural burn at Ryans Lagoon in Wodonga. Aboriginal Elders led the way, managing fire across the landscape and lagoon banks.

The cultural burn on Aboriginal-managed land was conducted with the support of FFMVic and CFA and marks a significant milestone that paves the way for more burning on Country that integrates cultural practices.

Uncle Allan Murray, a Duduroa Dhargal Edler said: “Ryan's Lagoon is a really important place for Duduroa Dhargal people, it would have been a key area for my people to hunt and gather other critical resources. That why it’s a priority for us to better manage and protect this area.”

Cultural Burn Officers played a vital role, serving as a link between DEECA, CFA and Traditional Owner Groups on matters of self-determination, culturally safe workplaces, relationships, training and navigating processes.
